The value of money

Pick a year and type an amount: what that year's money is worth now, or what today's money would have been then. The arithmetic uses published consumer prices — a measurement of the past, and nothing about the future.

Work it out

On 1 January 2005 the lira dropped six zeros. For a year before that, type the amount in OLD lira (5,000,000, for instance).

Type an amount.

How the figure is built

The series is the published change in annual-average consumer prices from 1986 to 2025. The answer runs to 2025 rather than to today: this year's average does not exist yet, and estimating it would invent the one number a reader came here to check.

Years compound rather than add: two years of 50% is 125%, not 100%. A year's figure is the step INTO that year, so carrying money from 1995 multiplies 1996 onwards and never 1995 itself.

Both ends are annual averages, not a particular day. "1995" means that year's average price level; the series cannot do months, and pretending otherwise would show a precision it does not have.
